Learn About Obstetric Fistulas

Obstetric fistulas are a preventable and treatable condition that affects millions of women worldwide. With access to appropriate healthcare and resources, women with obstetric fistulas can recover and regain their health and dignity. Obstetric fistulas occur when prolonged or obstructed labor causes a tear between the vagina and bladder or rectum, resulting in incontinence and social isolation. According to the United Nations Population Fund, there are up to 2 million women living with untreated obstetric fistulas globally, and up to 100,000 new cases occur each year. However, with increased awareness and investment in prevention and treatment efforts, progress is being made in addressing this issue. For example, organizations such as the Fistula Foundation and UNFPA are working to provide women with access to safe childbirth and obstetric care, as well as surgeries to repair fistulas.
