In the beginning, the intention was simple – get homeless families back on their feet. It took a split-second to recognize that many of these families had substance abuse problems, and then another second to recognize there may be mental health concerns. Those few seconds defined the direction of The Life Link. Our programs primarily focus on housing, mental health, and substance abuse. We provide help to people that are in need of one service and any combination of the three.

*KISORO COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS ASSOCIATION (KCVA) *Who we Are* *KCVA* is a local, volunteer-driven NGO/CBO based in *Kisoro District, South-Western Uganda*. Started in the early 2000s by Kisoro residents who wanted to tackle poverty, HIV/AIDS, and poor farming yields in their own communities. *What we Do* KCVA *utilizes* local volunteers, international volunteers and partnerships to run programs in 5 main areas: 1. *Farming & Food Security* Trains small holder farmers on improved potato, beans, and vegetable farming. Teaches post-harvest handling, kitchen gardens, and links groups to markets. 2. *Women & Youth Empowerment* Forms Village Savings groups + SACCOs. Teaches record keeping, bargaining, and business skills. Helps women speak up in community meetings. 3. *Health Support* Community education on malaria, nutrition, maternal health, and HIV/AIDS. Home visits for vulnerable families. Supports school fees for orphans. 4. *Environment* Tree planting and soil conservation on Kisoro’s steep hills. Works to reduce conflict between farmers and wildlife near Mgahinga Gorilla Park. 5. *Education* Back-to-school drives for girls, adult literacy circles, and scholastic materials for vulnerable kids. *How we Work* -Volunteer model : Trained local volunteers mobilize communities and follow up weekly. Keeps costs low, trust high. - *Partnership model*: KCVA doesn’t work alone. I HAVE A DREAM-OVERTOWN INC
I Have a Dream – Overtown, Inc (IHAD) serves 50 at-risk high school (11th and 12th grades) students. These children have been chosen ten years ago to be “Dreamers” by the I Have a Dream – Overtown program, which has pledged to provide financial assistance for their higher education if the “Dreamer” graduates from high school. The organization is committed to providing whatever services are needed as they complete high school (in the next two years) for the “Dreamers” and their families to help them reach their full potential. . By introducing quality prevention and promotion services, coping and management skills, college readiness techniques, and technological enhancements to these children now with constant re-enforcements and follow through, the I Have a Dream – Overtown program will be able to enhance the needed tutorial, enrichments and life skill programming it has put in place for the “Dreamers”. The ultimate goal is for every child to graduate from high school and pursue higher education. This is a longitudinal program essentially serving the same cadre of students since first grade (now in high school). The emphasis is part of an overall, long-term intervention and college scholarship program for the Dreamers.
